| HIV infection
most commonly occurs through sexual contact. However, the virus
can also be spread through blood-to-blood contact -- such as
sharing needles or blood transfusions involving unscreened blood.
Studies have shown that HIV is not transmitted through casual
contact such as touching or sharing towels, bedding, utensils,
telephones, swimming pools, or toilet seats. HIV is not only
a problem for adults, children and teens suffer from HIV as
well. |

The Barents
Region is one of few remaining areas with a relatively pristine
natural environment: this implies a high quality of life, but
it also entails a great responsibility. Most of the European
Arctic is biologically richer and more productive than other
Arctic areas because of the warming effects of sea currents
and air masses.

| The Barents region
is characterised by long distances, harsh climate and the social
extremes of deeply rural areas and highly modern cities. The
region has vast natural resources but also environmental threats
of global significance, and its image contains elements of free
wilderness and restrictive dependency. Around 5 million people
reside in this maintly circum- plar area that in the 1990s was
designated a region. |
